Garden Detectives

Garden Detectives – Free Nature Activities for Kids and Families

You don’t have to travel far for an adventure. In fact, some of the most magical discoveries are waiting right outside your door. Whether you have a garden, a balcony or a local park, there’s a whole world of wildlife and wonder just waiting to be noticed.

That’s why I created Garden Detectives, a free family activity pack filled with nature activities for children that inspire curiosity, encourage creativity and bring more calm to everyday life. It’s simple, flexible and designed to help you enjoy time together outdoors (no matter the space you have.)

Why I Created Garden Detectives

As a mum of two and a former primary school teacher, I know how much of a difference time outside can make for both children and grown-ups. Fresh air, freedom to explore and space to slow down can lift moods, ease stress and spark conversations that wouldn’t happen anywhere else.

But I also know how busy life gets. Screens, schedules and to-do lists can sometimes leave little room for simply being together. Garden Detectives is my way of making it easy for families to:

Learn about nature together in a way that feels playful, not pressured

Make creative projects from simple things you find outside

Enjoy mindful moments outdoors that help everyone feel more present and connected

The Three Cs – The Heart of Garden Detectives

Every activity in the pack is built around the three Cs — simple principles that can have a big impact on your family’s wellbeing and connection:

Curiosity

Curiosity fuels learning. When children notice a tiny bug, a strange leaf shape or an unusual sound, they’re building observation skills, asking questions and developing a love for discovery that can last a lifetime.

Creativity

From leaf rubbings to nature collages, creativity gives children the freedom to explore ideas and make something unique. It’s not about perfect results but instead it’s about enjoying the process and seeing the world in new ways.

Calm

Mindful activities help children (and parents!) slow down, tune into their senses, and find moments of stillness. These skills can help with emotional regulation, resilience and feeling grounded in busy times.

The Benefits of Outdoor Learning for Children

Spending time outdoors isn’t just good for physical health, it supports children’s emotional and cognitive development too. It offers fresh air and movement, builds confidence and encourages problem-solving and teamwork.

The Garden Detectives pack is designed to make outdoor learning easy and enjoyable:

Every activity works in gardens, parks or even on a balcony

You can dip in and out depending on your time and energy

Children can follow their own interests and if they want to take an idea in a completely different direction, that’s encouraged!

It’s perfect for weekends, school holidays or those “what shall we do today?” moments.
