Back to school

Last Wednesday I had the absolute privilege to go into a local Primary school to teach some introductory sessions on Mindfulness as part of their Wellbeing Week. I started with Reception and worked my up to Year 6! I had about 30 minutes with each class and so focused on some key areas. Firstly I introduced them to the Mind Jar and Monkey Mind. We talked about how our mind can get very busy and be a bit like a storm with all our emotions and feelings. We can have sad thoughts, happy thoughts, angry thoughts, nervous thoughts etc. during the day. We then shook our glitter filled Mind Jar to show this swirling around. I also introduced them to my monkey friend who is like our Monkey Mind. He jumps around to the past (e.g. I had a bad morning coming to school this morning) and the future (I wonder whether my friend will play with me at lunchtime?) instead of focusing on the moment we are in now.

We learnt how Mindful Breathing can help calm our stormy mind and give the monkey a job so he stops jumping around! I am hoping some of the children could demonstrate Minful Breathing at home! We also enjoyed using Alphabreaths by Dr Christopher Willard to show us some different ways to do some Mindful Breathing. The children loved finding out what there was for X, Y and Z and I had to show them two of my favourites, the Alligator Breath and Lion Breath. Roar!

The children also participated in a Mindfulness meditation about the Monkey Mind and did so well!

A huge well done to the children and thank you again to the Fulbourn staff for making me feel so welcome.
