A gentle Halloween week for families

The Pumpkin Patch of Kindness

Seven little doors, with seven small ways to bring kindness, calm and creativity to your family. Made by Mindful Explorers.

Does Halloween feel a bit much?

For some children, Halloween is exciting. For others, the decorations, costumes and scary stories can feel overwhelming. And for many families, half term is busy enough without finding something to plan.

The Pumpkin Patch of Kindness is a gentle alternative. Each day in the week leading up to Halloween, you open a new door and find a choice of 3 small things to do together. There are no scary themes, no big shopping list and nothing for you to plan.

What it does for your family

  • Gives you something calm and cheerful to do together in the build up to Halloween

  • Helps children notice and practise kindness, towards other people, themselves and nature

  • Brings small, quiet moments into busy days

  • Gives you simple things to talk about together, without any preparation

What you'll get

  • The Kindness Doors: an online page with seven doors, one for each day, each with something to DO, something to PAUSE and something to MAKE

  • A short email for grown ups: sent each morning, with a little more detail about the day

  • Bonus surprise printables: to enjoy along the way

When it starts

Everything begins on Saturday 24th October, when you'll receive a welcome email explaining how it works, with the link to your Kindness Doors. The first door opens on Sunday 25th October and the last on Saturday 31st October.

Joining by Friday 23th October means your welcome email will be waiting for you on Saturday.

How it works

Each door has three small parts:

  • DO: one small act of kindness

  • PAUSE: a quiet moment to breathe, notice or talk together

  • MAKE: a simple creative idea, if you'd like one

You can do it after school in ten minutes, stretch it out over a half term day, or weave it into your home education week. Start whenever suits you and go at your own pace.

Who it's for

  • Families with children of primary school age, with younger or older siblings welcome to join in

  • Families who'd like a gentler Halloween, or whose children find it frightening

  • Busy parents who want something simple to fit around school, half term or home education

Questions

Do we need special materials? Just paper, pens and things you'll find around the house or on a walk. One idea uses a jar and a battery tea light but I will send alternative ideas for that day.

Is it suitable for younger children? Yes. The activities can be adapted, and older children can lead the way.

What if we miss a day? Once a door has opened, it stays open, so you can catch up whenever you like.

Is there anything scary? No. This is a gentle alternative to Halloween.
